Got a 99 FXSTC, and the braided metal clutch cable drips a bit.
I've been told this is typical, because the braid doesn't crimp well into
the fitting .....

Other than getting a new cable is there any fix to this ?
I was thinking of some way to seal or coat the bottom 16" (coming out of
the tranny).
Maybe with black shrink fit or something.
Any ideas ?

That is not recomended cowboy.... NOOOOO not at all. Braided lines are pretty... but a pain in the arse... I have never heard of a way to stop the problem you speak of... but covering the fitting and line in shrink wrap is a no no. (The oil will only make it's way out eventually anyway.) If ya don't want to do the cleanup... change the cable.

Ya the cost of the cable isn't much, is this something that can be
done at home, or does it have to go to the shop i.e., need special tools etc...

You can do it at home it's easy....you will need to get a new tranny side cover gasket, and new gear oil as you will have to drain it to change the cable.

thanks , any trick to getting it adjusted after the install.

Make sure you have it adjusted before you put the dipstick back in or you could snap it off inside. If you have a service manual it should walk you through the steps. It's pretty easy.
