I have a 02 Kawi Mean Streak 1500 FI
lately the bike has started to ping when
I accel between 2500 and 3K.
I use 93 oct fuel and the bike is Stock
I was thinking of switching to NGK Iridiam plugs, but the
only application avaialble is at 1 cooler heat range from
the stock plug.
Need some advise on switching to this plug.
Thanks,
MOF

You said the bike is stock, but have you made any modifications to the bike....exhaust, intake or anything else. Is the bike carb, or EFI ?
Need more info to help you....but first thought is your running lean, and need more fuel.

Hey FatBoyRider:
The bike is completerly stock. No pipes, intake or fuel management.
The bike has a catalytic converter (can you believe that s..t)!
All Kawai's have what is called a Kleen system to cut down
emissions. They need it for thier Calf market, so they just build
the same system all over the country.
I believe the bike is running LEAN..
I am hoping that the NGK Iridiam plugs will promote a more
complete combustion and either eliminate or reduce the pinging.
The only thing is the plug application is 1 heat range cooler
than the stock NGK factory plug.
Any suggestions?

A lot of the bigger V-twin Kawasaki's that have carbs use the same carb as a stock Harley-Davidson, and that is a Keihin CV (constant velocity) Carburetor. If the bike is indeed running lean, you can put bigger jets in the carb. Sounds to me you may just need a bigger main jet, if so that would be a simple fix. Of course if the bike is fuel injected, forget all that, you will need a "re-flash" for the EFI module.
If it's a carb and you need to re-jet....follow the current thread titled "rejetting carb" that Mark started.....there are some pics I posted of a Keihin CV carb.....same applies for Kawasaki's with the CV 40mm carb......let us know what you figure out.
Also ,since your in Georgia and not California.....If I were you I would yank that emmisions shit off of the bike :D

FatBoyRider:
Later this year I am going to replace pipes, and add a Fuel monitor and thunder kit. I figure cost with labor at $1 grand.
that should help!
Thanks for your advise.
