I wanna new bike
 

I have asked on here how to change the sound of my Shadow, well I figured out how to.........buy a different bike.:p I am looking for a Sportster. Preferably 1200 but not the deciding factor. I would like to keep it under $5000. Any ideas. I could travel to Oregon, Idaho, Montana and possibly Northern California. Thanks

That sounds like a great plan. Sporties rock. Pop in your local bike shop and start spreading the word to them and everyone you know. You'll find a deal in time. Maybe even do an Ebay search by geographical area.

Blue Eyes, one thing to be aware of......Sportsters are top heavy. I've ridden them, and my FatBoy is easier to balance than a Sporster, and my FatBoy is a lot heavier bike. The FatBoy has a lower center of gravity, and you sit "in" a FatBoy rather than on "top" of a Sportster. Not sure how tall you are, or, how strong you are, so it may not be a problem for you.

Also, I would suggest you look at an FXD (Dyna SuperGlide) , they are the lowest priced "big twin" bike Harley makes and have a better center of gravity....Sportsters are fine bikes for sure, I'm just trying to make you aware of everything before you buy.

Good luck....and before you buy...see if the seller is willing to take the bike to have it checked out at a Harley dealer, or Independent shop before the deal is done. You could split this cost with the seller. That way you know the bike is mechanically sound....and if the bike is in good shape mechanically, the seller should not have a problem doing this. If he does, he's obviously trying to hide something...or not serious about selling.

Not sure if I can add anything further just wish you luck in your search. I had a 1200 Sportster Custom that I really liked. Needed more room for the wife and all she takes when we travel so traded up to a Road King and I really like it too. For me so many choices not enough money. again good luck.

Sporties are a good switch from a shadow they ride close to the same I think. I would buy a early 90's 883 they are pretty cheap around 4 to 6000 and that way for a little more money you can put a 1200 upgrade in it. The upgrade i like is buell heads and buell 1200 jugs and pistions they are matched to the heads and preform a little better than the wesico. A a cam I like Andrews. You can upgrade for about 2500. A hugger sits better than a standard also. It depends on the ridin style big bike for tourin or a sporty for beatin other harleys. If I was to have a bigger bike I would suggest a used fatboy or softail. Motor option is another thing TC88 or EVO. I personally like the EVO we get to many bad TC88's in the shop. The evo is aftermarket friendly and much more solid. That is my experence. Ask and ride do some research on your own. Everyone has diffrent opinons on things. Its your money dont let them buy your bike for you. And if they wont let you ride dont buy it. Good Luck...

thanks for the advise guys. I am 5'7" and have not even ridin a year yet. I have ridden about 3000 miles already. I only want to spend about $4500 to $5000. Don't want to join the payment club, if ya know what I mean. Eventually I want to step up to a lowrider or fatboy. Plannin on a few bigger road trips and would like more bike under me.

the advice about Sporties having a high center of gravity is good advice and true, but still the bike itself is a LOT lighter than any big twin Harley. So it may be just as easy or even easier to upright a big twin Harley, but you are WELL aware of the mass once it's uprighted. I am not a big guy, 5'-10", 163 lbs, and moving my Road King around in parking lots, and in and out of my garage is a serious chore and requires mother loads of grunt. I can push around a sporty all day long and not break a sweat.

OK, so now that I've typed it I realize that's a bit of an extreme comparison. But still, even a stripped down FX is heavier than a sporty, that's the jist of what I'm trying to say. It may be easier to upright, but in those instances where it needs to be pushed backwards or forwards in parking lots and stuff, the sporty might be the better choice for blue eyes. Key word; "might".

OK boys, I am a weaklin. All I do is cut hair all day. No big guns on this blondee. My hubby has a Nighttrain and I can barely lift it off the stand. I can't imagine trying to get it around slow corners. I don't want to scare myself away from ridin.I wanna get a 1200 custom for now. Get myself feeling secure with it then go up to a lowrider or fatboy. Plus the old pocketbook doesn't want me to buy a bigtwin right now. :(

Good plan. Ride for comfort and to your ability. When you're ready, you'll know.
