A Cruise to Maine
 

I am taking a cruise to Maine from Michigan that should run from about the 7th to the 15th. I am planning about five days in Maine in or around Orono. Anybody have any thoughts or ideas about "gotta do's" and "must see's".:D

Seemed to be more fitting for a general forum like this In the Wind. The only thing I know in Maine is nature trails...and the only thing I know in Michigan is Detroit and there ain't much to see there.

Truth is sometimes ruff. Maine doesn't offer alot other than serenity and Detroit surely is a good place to ride AROUND and I don't mean around in, I mean AROUND. Been to Penn and it's certainly different than Mich-'cept the weather. Lots of deer. Never saw more deer than in Penn. But, there has to be something interesting to do along the route of this trip. My daughter is graduating from dental school out in Maine in May and so I have to go. I have to make it fun. I've already been struck by mountain shock on other trips and I've been to the armpit of the USA-Boston-another good place to go AROUND and I just want to find a way to enjoy this trip to it's best. As I was born in NH and still have relatives up that way the truth being that it may be a little early for a trip up that way. If the weather cooperates that is really some pretty country all around the New England area. If your still lost up that way we are leaving Arkansas the first of June for the New England area and might be able to lead you back out,just kidding have a great ride and watch for the moose and deer.

knuc37-It's a fine thought that you had there. To bad you're not going till June. I'd love to make that trip with a ridin' buddy as it were. I think I will love the trip anyway as up east is some of the most beautiful scenery that I've ever seen. I was a little drawn by your thought that May might be a little early-do you really think so? I really don't want to travel 1400 miles frozen to the saddle you know? (it may not be 1400 miles actually-but if it's going to be cold it may as well be 14,000) We can't win up here on a prolonged basis. This north country is pretty but just to damn cold for to many months-I WANNA GO WHERE I CAN RIDE!!!!-ITW

Hey Wind ,not trying to talk you out of your trip but in my days of living in New Hampshire I have seen snow on easter week end enough to go sking on. It will be cold weather riding in May but with the right clothes you can make it alright.April and May are the mud seasons up that way so try and stay away from dirt roads. Don't forget the deer and moose around that neck of the woods and have a good trip. You can always come to Arkansas and ride with some of the crazies down this way.

to come south and figure out if there is anyway to get the wife interested. The cold does get worse as I ad on the years. I will be coming south for the ride because it has to be done and the invite makes it even more enticing. I lived in Louisiana and always thought that my heart was in Dxie anyway. Now that I say it that seems like the larger issue. I really just loved living in the south. The riding is just a really huge benefit of that. Don't know which year but I will be yellin' at ya'll one time or another with plans to make a run that way-ITW

When in Maine?
 

My fav stop is Old Orchard Beach. Nice little tourist trap. I always enjoy the ride along Rt 1. Happy trails.:)

It's gettin' close to leavin' time and I'm curious where that beach is. I'm still tinkering with my route intentions and have been thinking of running thru NY along the NY/Penn border. I wanna avoid Boston-way to much of everything that's yuck-'cept the people. Never met a Bostoner I didn't get on with. Anyway, I'll be checking back to see if you got back to me. Thanks-ITW:)

Old Orchard Beach
 

Is located in southern Maine , it's just south of Portland by Saco. I like riding along Rt. #1 it runs up along the sea coast. All the Ole New England fishing villages. Lobester any one! 93 goes tru Boston DON'T go there. 95 Goes around the city depends on time of day it's not so bad. 495 is even further westward away from and goes around the city it's longer but a better choice.
