Ear plugs, yea or nea?
Who wears ear plugs while riding? What style/brand? Likes, dislikes? Opinions on this subject?
Just curious about this whole thing. It's an issue I revisit every year or two. I don't use them and don't like the idea of them but lots of people I know do use them and think I should too. |
I'm a big fanatic about hearing loss. Every year I think I'm going deaf and get tested...usually to find out my hearing is pretty good. Maybe I have selective hearing?
Anyway, I use ear plugs when shooting stuff and I have tried it while riding. Usually it's when I'm going on a long trip or traveling with a group of people, like in a charity ride. On my short around town trips I had never used them...just because I feel like I'd be missing something (other horns, cars, whistles from the ladies, expletives from irrate drivers, etc...). I just always wore those swishy foam type ones that expand when you put them into your ear on moto rides. Of course I've never gone as far as to put the 'gun range earmuffs' on. |
I'm thinking of trying these:
http://www.ear-responsible.com/musician.html I like the way they are described. I'll try them at rock concerts which I go to quite a bit (3 per month) and then I'll try them riding. |
You know, I've never thought about wearing earplugs while riding, but now that you mention it, they might be nice on long rides. Don't know that I would wear them around town. Like Mongo said
just because I feel like I'd be missing something (other horns, cars, whistles from the ladies, expletives from irrate drivers, etc...). |
Yea! 2 tears ago when drove straight thru to laconia 5 1/2 hrs, by the time we got there I couldn`t even here the guy to check into the hotel. My buddy was laughing but it wasn`t funny at all. Some people are more affected by wind noise than others.I`m one of the unlucky ones.Short rides around home .hr. or two are no problem.I either where my good helmet with the padded ear covers attached or plugs or tissue wadded up or whatever I can get in there that will also come out.I believe in them.At 42 I still think I loose a little hearing every year. What?

I use 'em on longer trips. They really do help. I was getting headaches and someone suggested them. Since, whenever I takeoff on a long trip I "try" to remember them. I always have them in the bike...just trying to remember is the trick!
I usr the rubber ribbed ones. I just lick 'em and stick 'em! :p Those you were lookin at Woo Woo are nice...but a bit hefty on the pocketbook! Mine I got from work for free and they work great! I think I saw them at Wal-Mart for under $10!;) |
Well, I don't get to ride very often, but when I do I don't wear ear plugs. I just love the sound of a Harley rolling down the highway. That's just about as sweet as hearing a woman in the throws of passion. :D
|
I do not use ear plugs when riding. If a motorcycle is so loud that you need ear plugs when you are riding it, then it is FAR too loud.
Only had one case when I could have used ear plugs, and that was when the exhaust pipe on my YSR50 came loose. But that was only once, and that has been fixed. |
It`s not that the pipe is too loud ,it`s just plain wind noise.I run 2 into 1 and it ends below the bag so it`s not that. And I don`t have gigantic ears either!!!
|
Amen to that...now a days, I don't run loud pipes...rather embarrassingly quite as a matter of fact...but the wind noise after a while on the road does give me a headache. The ear plugs knock the edge off and allow me to have a clear head after the ride ;) .

HUH...... Did someone say something?
|
What?...I didn't hear anything.
|
Yeah....hey.....hello..... Did somebody say my name?
No....hmm.....swore I heard it. |
I use ear plugs every time I ride. No exceptions. Is that the phone or the ringing in my ears. If you ride enough with out ear plugs, eventually you will not need them anymore. I use custom molded ear plugs. There is that damn phone again. Made from the same mold for my hearing aids.
Will someone answer that damn phone. Rapido |
Mongo... "I use earplugs while shooting stuff..." LOL! I was just curious... what "stuff" do you shoot? :-p
