Hello from Sherman, Texas
 

Hello. I'm new to this forum. I live in Sherman, Texas which is close to the Texas/Oklahoma border, close to Lake Texoma. I have a 1981 Suzuki GS750L that I purchased within the last 6 mos. I've been a rider on and off for about 20 yrs, started out on a Yamaha Enduro 125 when I was younger, and worked my way up to my current bike. I enjoy riding the bike more than driving any other vehicle. I'm having carburetor problems, so therefore I am unable to ride until I get this thing figured out. If anyone has any tips/upkeep info, please feel free to let me know, as I want to keep this thing as long as I can, until I can actually afford a new one. If anyone also is familiar with this bike and think I can use their experiences with it please let me know. I'm glad to be on board.

Welcome to BikerForums Randall, glad you are here. sounds like you have some good riding experience. As far as that carb is concerned, let us know what the problem is and we have a ton of people that might be able to help. Don't be afraid to ask questions on here a lot of knowledgeable people ready to help.

Carb problems
 

When I first noticed my problem, my bike would sit in the garage for a couple of days, and when I would take it down from the stand, I noticed gas draining thru the drain tube from the breather box. I had the bowls cleaned out, lined the tank w/kreem, and had the needles and seats cleaned. After the needles were re-installed, it started what seemed like flooding thru and was causing more gas to pass thru the drain tube and got the right side of the rear tire and brake caliper wet/soaked. It's in a friends shop, and he is going to try and get new needles and seats. If anyone can tell me anything other than this, please feel free to let me know. This is a good bike, and was inherited thru my family and I would like to get it in good shape. Also, what size bolts hold the handle bars on for a Suzuki GS750L. I took the windshield off and had to leave the bars on that it mounts to.

Thanks for the welcome, I hope I get a call and the friend that is working on the carbs says it's running better than ever. I will wait and see. I need to be out riding instead of driving. The weather here is in the 70's and clear w/ a little bit of clouds, but I'm stuck with driving for now!!

Welcome to the site Randall. Best of luck with the carb problem. I'm at a loss for ideas right now. I do have a nice Fatboy for sale that doesn't leak anything. Maybe that's a quick fix for ya!!! Anyhow, welcome aboard!

Thanks for the welcome. I wouldn't mind, picking it up from you, but with 4 kids and 2 of them are in high school, the money is usually in their pockets. I just happen to be the one who has to put it there. Something is not right with this picture, but I guess they need to have good times w/ their friends. I checked on the bike today, and it may be that the petcock is not closing off. The man I have working on it says he clamped off the feed hose, and It hasn't dripped gas. The manual handle on the petcock is missing and he said he couldn't get it to shut off with a screwdriver. Do you happen to know what a kit to rebuild 4 mikuni carbs would cost? I think that's what needs to be done pretty soon, and maybe needing to find a petcock. You know anyone who may be parting out a GS750L in your area? I check the website to see what may be out there.

That would be your problem is my guess. The older bikes weren't vaccuum, they were gravity. I have a 72 Honda that will do that if you forget to turn the fuel off.

About the best I can do for you is talk with my local suzuki dealer. They treat me quite well and may be able to locate some parts for you. I have another source for the older stuff as well. If you want to call out of state, call Tim Pazour at 319.364.2611. He knows a lot about Suzuki. Tell him Jeff H told you to call. Either that or call Metro Suzuki at 319.362.9496 (www.metroharley-davidson.com) and ask for Buckey. Once again, tell him I sent you. J&P Is always a good resource as well.

What size carb do you have? If it's a HSR 42, 45 or 48 then a rebuild kit costs $34.99 in the J&P catalog. Sorry, all I have is the Harley catalog since I don't any metric bikes. Have your friend make sure that all your carbs are sincronized too. That might be why its running so rough.

I tried to get a call 2 bike shops here to see if I can get a petcock, but remembered both are closed on Mondays. I'll check with one in Denison, Texas and see what they can come up with. It seems that when you need something specific, you can't find it, but when you don't need it anymore, you see them everywhere. Maybe starting with a new petcock can get me in the right direction for a start. Thanks, and any help is appreciated.

Heavyduty, I have the Mikuni VM26SS. Do you know any dealer/parts store that would have kit that would be able to re-build 4 carbs? I going to try a new petcock, and maybe rebuilding the carbs later.

Check your local bike dealer. If they don't have it then I'm pretty sure that J&P would have it. I know that they have a catalog for metric bikes but I don't have one, you can call and have one delivered for free. I'm sure your local dealer should have the kit if it's a stock carb. Or look it up online.
