New to motorcycles...

Hey all,
I am new to bikes-- I drove one once 2 years ago and ridden a fear years ago. I am almost 19 and I want one for myself.. I know little about them soI am asking questionsa and talking to bike owners. I am looking for a smaller (400-750 at tops) bike. Right about now, I have no money--- problem with being a college student.. i will be working this summer and will be able to make a little bit.. I like the yamaha virago, the honda shadow, the older honda nighthawk and the suzuki intruder. I prefer cruisers but enduros, and stardards are fine by me as well. my Main questions area aboiut what protective gear is the best for a deent budget (I know that body protection is the most important part of biking for a beginner:p ) Also, what bikes would possible be a good beginner? Open to any ideas... thanks
Jeremy
EDIT-- oh yeah I am in Michigan either at school in the UP or in The Grand Rapids Area uring the summer

The most important thing to do is take a motorcycle safety coarse first. It is better not to learn bad habits, then have to break them later. The essentials are head, eye, legs, hands, feet and arms protection. ie helmet, goggles/face shield, abrasion resistanc pants, gloves, boots, and a long sleeve jacket (leather/mesh). I think the other key is to ride, and ride often. Know your bike and know your skill level and stay in your comfort zone.
