Oil Temp Question
 

After on going discussions about oil temp with a few of my buddies, I'd like to get some of the forum members opinions about this. Here goes: I have a digital oil temp dipstick on my '02 RK Classic. In hot weather (90 or above), oil temp is usually around 230 degrees, give or take a few. In colder weather, it's usually below 210 degrees. One friend swears 230 is too high. I say no, because in order to "ccok off" any moisture that may get into your oil (due to condensation) the oil would have to get above the boiling point of water (220 degrees) To bolster my argument, I even showed him my shop manual, which lists the normal operating oil pressure, at a temp. of 230 degrees. He still insists it's too high, and that I should install an oil cooler. Keep in mind this guy has no idea what his oil temp gets to on his '04 Deuce. It could be just as high as mine. What do you guys think?

If your manual says that 230 is normal then I would just not pay attention to the friend. I don't think that I would start to worry until the temp got over 250-260. Have you been having any problems with your bike?

Nope. No problems at all. Runs great even in this hot and humid weather.

Assuming that the gauge is accurate..... Step 1.

If there were an issue, or fear of one, I would simply use a synthetic motor oil and all issues of heat related oil degredation would be resolved.

Good point. I guess I could stick it in a pot of boiling water and see if it reads 220. We use digital pyrometers where I work, and maybe I'll borrow one and take a reading with that as verification.

The manual speaks a lot about your ride than some other personal experiences. Stick to it. If it ever gets you wrong, keep in touch with your dealer.

230 temp is nt a great issue.... chk out with ur dealer if it goes above 260....

Hey JunkYard, as technotask and the others tell ya, your temp is FINE.. Tell your buddy to educate himself....LoL Better yet tell him to ride in GA. or Florida on his air cooled HD in mid summer THEN tell us about oil temps...LoL

Dr. Haas is s dipshit. He has been destroyed on Bob Is The Oil Guy because of his outrageous claims. He is the guy who promotes running 0-5 weight in everything.However....I like to read his stuff mainly because it promotes thought.....but I have dismissed him as a educated "guesser".....what is your question about his old oil temp ramblings?

if i get the mobile one....sorry if this is a really dumb question do i need to look for motorcycle specific engine oil?

240 - 260°F you make HP. Anything below or above, the dyno guides your temperature readings showing this as old news.

0-5w oil at any temp will not harm a street bike or car engine. 20-50w at any temperature will not blow up or starve an engine being the oil is too cold, you are pushing ice cubes through the oil pump?

Hey Guys I was looking hi and low for a analog temperature gauge for my Dyna WG because I was wondering the same thing about my oil temperature what is it and is it too hi becasue my motor runs hot. I found the guy JESCustomAccents and I have been running his analog gauge on my bike for about two months man is it ever better than the stupid HD one that breaks all the time, I am running about 220F -235F. here is his link to the dyna's temp gauge.

No, not at all. You want a hot engine so you do not have condensation building in the air pockets of the oil bag or the engine case. The hot heat burns off that water from turning chocolate light in color.

The other is that you are just putting around at low rpm. When you are at high racing speed and high rpm, you then tax the engine, create more heat at the crank.

See, if you put your finger over the spark plug hole, or feel the air rush out of an air hose, that is the kinetic friction heat going on. Trying to stop all that pressure, you feel that heat on your fingertip.

Same happens, you push that faster oil flow out of the crank journals; it heats up there a lot in the kinetic. That heat and combustion heat running a lot of rpm; adds even more heat. See where you could build up to 280°F no problem?

Having your 220-230°F is perfect for normal street use and hot enough to burn the condensation away.

The oil temp guage shows an extremely high temper (330f) when riding in 50f weather at freeway speeds. I just don't see any way this is happening. At all! :confused:

Dude, When you ride at 50F, is the bike giving off a lot of heat or has it been normal for the most part. A temp read can be better spent gluing a few sticky temperature coins like and outside thermometer.

Once sticks on a head. The other sticks on the oil bag. Throw one down on the case and now add the three so you can witness an average is about all you can do. Rely on one guy you might chase your tail.

Would I tear down the top end just to see if I hurt something? No. I would hear a different sound like rough idle or really hard knocking on acceleration either hard of soft get away. Do we have those symptoms at all?

I took my R8 for 5 laps around a race track and the oil temp gauge went up to 150 degrees or right of the gauge. The water temp was at normal so I am guessing it could be a faulty sender or gauge can any one advise on this?? Thanks
