Oily Question

I've got a question for all you HD owners: I was at the stealer the other day buying my oils and filter for my pre-hibernation lube change on my '02 Road King. I noticed that HD is now making a single oil for the trans and primary. Sooo, I asked one of the employees what the deal is with this new oil. He says it was developed for the people who choose to run conventional 20-50 motor oil. OK, I guess it makes it easier in the fact that now you only need 2 types of oil.
Then he tells me that if I want, I can just go with the synthetic 20-50, and use it in the engine, trans, and primary. Well, I'm not completely comfortable with that, 'cause I always thought that you needed kind of a heavier weight hypoid oil for the trans and primary. Bottom line is I don't feel like risking wrecking my transmission on the advice of this guy. Has anyone out there heard of this and/or are running 20-50 synthetic in the entire bike? It would simplify things, but I'd like to get some other opinions on this.

I don't like the idea of synthetic in the primary because it's so slick making the clutch plates slip more than they should. I'm reading of riders putting Automatic Transmission Fluid TypeF in their primary and liking it alot.
As far as the transmission I will keep using a heavy weight trans fluid like 80 or 90 weight.
I use 20-50 dinosaur in the engine.
I tried 20-50 synthetic once and wasn't impressed at all.

I have a Barnett high performance Kevlar friction plates in my clutch so the synthetic works well in it.

you can use it in tranny

Amsoil makes one of the better synthetics.

3 in 1 Oil

I have read a lot of Q & A on this matter and the arrow always points at the use of the separate oils. When I started working/ridsing these things in 90 there were 3 oils from the motor co. I ride a 92 and was reluctant as you are to change to the "one size fits all" theory. When they said there is now 1 for the prim and trans I didn't like that but have conformed. I just got a hyper top end job w/ radical cam and intend on running valvoline 20-50 in the engine. An independant ran a test bacn in 01 or so that I read and the valvoline had more of the sacrifcial metal that these engines require for longevity than HD fossil oil. I will be running that because it is better in hyper engines that syn my mech tells me and he has over 30 years experience on these engines. I will now start using products other than hd because it is all the same just at a different price. I used to be invilved in the aftermarker and I have found the products to be the same only cheaper. The syn3 in the trans makes noise in some cases from what I read and when ever you change oils you are going against the current wear patterns.

Oily Question

Fusels I suppose??? Ive never froze backins before...matter of fact I only used backset to make a mash once. Kinda sounds like real concentrated tails...fusel oils separate from the rest of the backset when frozen?? Im just shooting in the dark here...

If your manual says that 230 is normal then I would just not pay attention to the friend. I dont think that I would start to worry until the temp got over 250-260. Have you been having any problems with your bike?
