Removing gas tank ?
 

Ok... calling on all gear heads. I have not had my bike for a year yet but am going to get it painted. I have the fenders off but am stuck on how to get the tank off. Does anyone have a step by step process for this. It is a o4' Fayboy. Thanks for any imput. :confused:

Do you have a service manual? If not, get one. It should have the steps in there otherwise it's just a matter of taking off the dash, disconnecting the fuel line and unbolting it from the frame.

Thanks, I did get as far as the dash removeal. But looked under the tank and it looks to have a line running under the back bone from either side of the tank. So I stopped. I have a FLSTFI I don't know if that makes a difference.

You will have to disconnect one side of the line. Do you have a one or two piece tank? Either way make sure you have a gas can to put the gas in when you disconnect the line.

It's a one piece tank. I am told that the petcock is pressurized.? (40psi) any suggestions on it?

I don't remove my petcock. I remove the fuel line from the intake that way the petcock keeps me from spilling fuel all over. My bike is carburated and I don't remember how it hooks up on EFI models. With the engine off it should just be a matter of disconecting at the injectors. Call your local dealer and see what they have to say about it.

Just make sure all the pretty stuff (paint/chrome) is covered and have something to drain all the gas into. Also, from experience wear some gloves that you wouldn't mind throwing out, I used my mechanix gloves and they got ruined from the gas....had to throw them out.

Step by step to the best of my recollection:

1. Remove the seat and the bolt at the base of the tank under seat

2. Remove the dash by taking off the nut in the center, make sure you cover the tank with something as to not scratch cause you will have to tilt the dash on it's side to remove the wires underneath.

3. Turn the petcock to off and remove your fuel lines and vaccuum lines.

4. Remove the fuel crossover hose. My recommendation on this is to clamp it in 2 places toward the center of the line, make your cut (basically leaving yourself enough room to cut it and put a T in it) insert the T, then hook some fuel line to the T and let it drain into a tank of some sort. Remove the crossover line once drained and buy a new one later.

5. Remove the front bolt for the tank which is located right about where the crossover line is.

Once out the tank should lift right off.

Let me know if I forgot anything. Mine was carburated, so it may be slightly different.
