Bike's on the lift

Hey kids, bikes on the lift, and I hope to have the new bars on this afternoon. I'll take some pics, and update with the procedure when I get a chance. Gotta drain the tank and get it off so I can undo all the wiring to run them internal. Is it sad that I am this excited about new bars??? I say hells no!!

WooHoo! 01-13-2004 11:12 AM

What kinda' bars you throwin' on it? I'm getting ready to put 16" apes on my RK

PHAT-BOY 01-13-2004 11:20 AM

Got a set of Wild 1 Chubbies. 2" rise, 10" pullback, 36" wide. Kind of a dragbar look, but with a pullback and slight rise. Should look pretty nice. Reasonable too.

cool

I had to splice my wiring, had to add about 5". I got the Chubbies 517's, they are 8 1/2 "mini apes, 31" wide, and 14 1/2 pullback.

You shouldn't have to splice your wires, they should be plenty long....you will just have to take the "deutsch" connectors apart...and remove the wires from the plugs so you can feed them through the bars...Oh yeah, draw a diagram of where each wire goes so you put them back in the right spot. I used a long piece of dental floss tied to a small nut to pass thru the bars first, tied to end to the wires and pulled them through.

Are you gonna change out your cables for braided stainless....now would be a good time to do it since you have all the controls off the bars.

Oh yeah...probably not best to drink beer while your doing the wiring :D

FBR

Ordered the braided lines earlier. Gotta do it man. Good timing too, while the bars are off. No beers for 2 weeks, started the Atkins diet again, and I have to wait 2 weeks to drink a brew.

harrigancan 01-13-2004 04:32 PM

Good luck with the bar change out I'm anxious to see pics of the finished product I know it will turnout great.

PHAT-BOY 01-14-2004 06:49 AM

Good lord, this is more of a task than I thought. Geez, take off the tank, the crossover hose is a pain in my ass by the way, then you have to undo 3 wiring harnesses, AND I have to remember where the wires go in the harness!! The turn signal harness is a royal pain as well by the way. Oh well, all in the name of progress I suppose.

FatBoyRider 01-15-2004 05:35 PM

Oh yeah....I forgot to mention the crossover hose :p

I took 2 small needle nose vise grip pliers and clamped off the hose, then cut the hose between the pliers with an exacto knife.....and replaced the 5/16 hose with a new one when I re-installed the tank.

hmmmmmmmmm?
hand signals don't require wiring LOL

WooHoo! 01-16-2004 07:06 AM

Hang in there Phat-Boy, soon you'll be off that god-forsaken no beer diet of yours, and using your new bars to ride to bars.
;-)

PHAT-BOY 01-19-2004 05:12 AM

Dammit FBR, where were you when I needed that info. Went pretty well considering. I'm gonna buy the braided crossover line to dress her up a bit.

FatBoyRider 01-19-2004 07:36 AM

Hey "home boy"....I went back with the regular rubber hose for now...stealer told me that they have had lots of trouble with the braided stainless crossover line leaking. Not cool to have 93 octane running down on top of a red hot front exhaust header
So, there's a shop in town that does custom braided lines for the NHRA drag cars at Houston Raceway Park....I may swing by there and see if they can make one for me. If that works out I'll let you know in case you want one.

FBR

PHAT-BOY 01-19-2004 04:02 PM

let me know man!!

fatster 01-19-2004 05:12 PM

I change my crossover every year. I come out to the parking lot and seen a puddle of gas under my bike twice. Lucky that I was I Lowes parking lot both times.

PHAT-BOY 01-20-2004 05:09 AM

Maybe you should stop riding to lowes???? lol

tekman 01-21-2004 06:24 AM

ANY PICS?

PHAT-BOY 01-21-2004 03:15 PM

took some, but no digital camera, so I have to finish the roll before I can scan and post.

tekman 01-22-2004 08:38 AM

ahhhhhh... :D i'll be waiting.. ;)

I`ve got one of those two piece braided cross-over lines that lock together for taking the tanks off and it`s the greatest thing since sliced bread.Just uncouple the two pieces and yank the tank, full or not.If you pull your tanks more than once a year, you`ll love me for it.

PHAT-BOY 03-01-2004 04:15 AM

Thanks for the input. Due to budget restrictions (fiance) I was unable to purchase the braided crossover, so I put the stock line back on for now. The bike is off the lift and only needs the front brake bled, tranny oil, and a grip on the left side and it's ready to ride. She'll be road worthy tonight and I'll get those pics developed asap.

Try that.

PHAT-BOY 03-02-2004 04:16 AM

not a bad price for something that handy. It's in the consideration book. By the way, bike is done. Finished last night and ready to ride. Of course it's raining here, but it's done. I'll get the pics up as soon as I can.
