Bought my first Harley
I bought my first Harley yesterday. It is a 92 Sportster 1200. Lots of extras. The guy didn't tell us it was a 1200. It had a different aircleaner on it. When he gave me the aircleaner then I noticed it was a 1200. I assumed it was a 883 because the price was really good. Well the price was REALLY good for a 1200. Now the wish list starts. I don't know how to do pics. When I figure it out I will post pics.

blue eyes,
Congrats on that newly purchased Sportster The wish-list yepper. Personalize it . |
Congrats Blue Eyes on the Sporty. I had a 1200 Custom before my Road King and really enjoyed it. Keep us posted on the goodies you add.

Thanks guys :) Looking for forward controls right now. I want a set that sticks out a little farther. The bike has a hypercharger on it and me knee hits it if I put my feet on the highway pegs. Any suggestions that won't cost me my first born child.

air filter/knee interference is a Sporty thing. you learn to bend that right leg a bit and get used to it.

Congrats on your new bike! I had a '92 1200 that I sold last Sept. It was a really nice bike. Very reliable, (I had it for 5 years, and put 14,000 miles on it with no problems) It handled nice and was resonably fast. There are many sites you can explore for fwd controls. They are definately worth the investment, as they make for a real comfortable riding position. Good luck and ride safe.

Blue Eyes, nice Sporty !!!
Hard to belive that it's a 1992 model :D Whoever had that scooter took very good care of her. I hope she gives you many, many, safe miles.....you got her at the perfect time of the year !!! Have fun this summer :D FBR  |
Wow what a great looking bike! I had 03 sortster 1200 with the forward and loved the controls. The biggest problem was that I couldn't stand up because the center of gravity was to far forward. I wanted to stand up a little on bumpy roads to save my butt. Just my 02 cents worth but I'd put a few miles on this beautiful bike before I made a final decision.
Good luck with the bike and ride safe! |
My hubby put the forward controls on last night. I think they will take a while to get used to. Does anyone know if the make a wider brake pedal? He is putting a longer foot peg on for me because my foot falls off the one I have. I am having a hard time pressing the brake pedal now. Not being a complainer but I have really messed up knees. I don't mind hittin the aircleaner but I would really like to be able to use the brakes.
|
Blue Eyes, you should be able to fit a pedal from an FL ( Fatboy, Heritage, or any of the touring bikes) to it, as they are wider.....probably will look big & ugly but it will help you get your foot where you need it. Remember the front brake does roughly 70% of the braking.....but the rear is still very important.

I had forward controls on my Sportster and had the same problem. Also found the shifter a little short. I traded up to a Road King before looking into changes to the Sportster. I would imagine with all the Harley add on products and aftermarket products out there you should be able to find something. Good luck.

Although I don't like the look of it, you could get some pedal cover from Kurykyan or something like it. Tons of variations in any parts catalog, may just give you that little extra that you're looking for and it should only put you back about $30.
|
Thanks for the ideas. My husband put the highway peg on the right side so it sticks out farther. We purchased a Kuryakan long horn pedal cover. It isn't the widest but it sure is alot better! Now if I can make myself us it :(
