Harley Davidson Wide tire up 200 for Softail
Any thoughts on the new Harley Davidson Wide tire kit for 180 to 200 tire.
Thinking of changing over to bigger tire on Softail. |
I didn't even know the the moco has a kit.
any links? |
Wide tire kits
Currently on the MOCO website they have 2 wide tire kits available for Softails. a 150 kit for 97-99 models, and a 150 kit for 00-02 models. Also they have a 180 tire listed for the SE Duece, but the SE Duece has a different swingarm than the rest of the Softail line.
I have a hard time believing you could get a 180-200 tire in a stock Softail swingarm, much less cram it under the fender. A 150 fills it up with little room to spare.... There are aftermarket kit's available I know, but they are very expensive. FBR  |
If I remember correctly, a guy Phat-Boy and I rode up to Milwaukee with had one of these kits on his 'old' fatboy that his wife was driving. We only rode with them from Dubuque to the beltway in Milwaukee - but I remember having a the conversation about the fat tire on his 'old' fat boy.
Phat-Boy talked to him about it more than I did. PB, I can't remember if it was one of these kits or did he do all the work himself? |
Bill was his name. Actually been trying to get ahold of him. He had some trick stuff done to that bike. He did the conversion himself. Milled some off the pulley side, then added a spacer on the brake side to compensate. I think he had a 160 or 170 tire on it. Personally, on a Fatboy, I don't see the need. You can't see that much of the tire under the stock fender anyhow, but to each their own. I'll let you know when I get ahold of him and get the details.

there's a kit to convert 00-and up softails to a 180 by switching from belt to chain.
www.dohertymachime.com i haven't ready any reviews, but it'd be interesting to look into. i like the PM kit that lets you go up to a 240 size. i've read some good reviews on that. |
Last night I looked in my new J&P book, there are several wide tire kits, included with a swingarm that will accept a 200+ tire. But they are expensive $2000-2700.

I'm running a 180
on my stock frame 87 softail no modifications at all. |
tom --how'd you do that?
|
Yeah...inquiring minds would like to know how you got the 180 stuffed in there.
FBR  |
No mods? You didn't have to go to the 1" belt? Inquiring minds want to know......
|
Ok, I could be mistaken, not really sure,
The tire is a 180, the belt is 1 1/2" and the clearence between the tire and the belt is only 1/8 " so it is close. There is no room for a lower belt guard. I would say that it is the orignal stock rear wheel, but then again, not sure. Its a solid wheel seen on many 87 Standard Softails. This is not a Heritage. I have no idea on what to look for on the swing arm to know if it is a stock one or not. I was assuming it was. But we all know what happens when we assume. you can see some of the pictures here: Code:
http://home.stny.rr.com/mork/My%20Bike/ But maybe someone can see something unusual or not stock . Its my first HD, and have not had it to any Shops to question anything. Except the engine, which I contacted S&S to know what exactly I had for an engine. Which turned out to be the S&S 96" on the HD bottom cases, to keep the numbers intact. All the info I have was from previous owner.and only an orignal title , no other paper work . Cept what I got from S&S as I gave them the numbers off the flywheel area, so they could help me identify what I had. There was no reason , for this, but my own personl inqury of what I reallly have. Retooled stroked, cammed, etc. I would think the next trip to the local Shop will help me identify some things, and will ask about if it is stock swing arm or what the real deal is. Which will be in the spring for inspection liscenseing purposes. If I lead someone astray by my statment, I truely appologize. As now you all have me being more curious about what I have. |
Yeah...inquiring minds would like to know how you got the 180 stuffed in there.
I'm sober now, DOH!!!! its a 130/90 not 180 damn 3's and 8's look close There, now that ya know that i don't know much , about tire sizes, we can continue on , DOH!!! I feel S0 StupiD A round of beers to everyone,,,,,,, |
Tom.....no problem, just a case of mistaken identity...lol
I know you can get a 140 Metzler 880 on there with no mods whatsoever (cause I have one). But to go up to a 150 most guy's have to at least turn the fender strut bolts around backwards, and use acorn nuts to cap them, and buy a thinner wheel spacer, or have theirs shaved, or you can get the "wide tire" kit from the MOCO which includes a 150 Dunlop tire, thinner wheel spacer, a machined and repositioned brake caliper, and splash guard.....all this for about $500 plus installation (unless you do it yourself ;) )....I'm very happy running Metzlers, and the 140 looks good to me.....
