Harley title transfer problem

Hi all- I just bought a '79 Harley Sportster 1000 from a friend and when I went to transfer the title they wanted to know what the engine serial number was and I said it was the same number as the VIN which I found on the fork frame. When I went to Harley Davidson.com to profile my bike it asked for my bikes VIN and when I entered the VIN it came back with the reply that the VIN that I entered does not match any on their records. Do Harleys have the same VIN and engine serial or does any bike? I thought they were always different numbers. Can anybody help me?

The VIN number on the frame and engine should match on your bike. Are you sure the frame is the original Harley frame ?, or could it be an after market frame ?. Either way check for the VIN number on the engine and run it on the Harley website and see what comes up.

Thanks fatboyrider-- just found out that the harley site only accepts VINs for 81 and new bikes. Mine is a '79 so yeah, thanks for the info I was a bit scared there for a while but now I know for sure I got a Harley frame and motor.
