My friend Matt at Cycles Unlimited in Portland, CT got the 16' chub/apes hung on the RK last night. He ran the internal wiring and made the measurements for the longer clutch cable and the brake lines. Bike should be done by the end of the week. Here's a pic.

tekman 03-08-2004 09:11 AM

damn looks awesome!

FatBoyRider 03-08-2004 11:13 AM

WooHoo your RK's gonna look awesome with those apes. Be sure and post a pic for us when your friend gets done.

FBR

WooHoo! 03-08-2004 11:21 AM

thanks guys, and you got it, I'll post pics soon as it's done. I sat on the bike last night and was thinking... "hmmm, maybe I shoulda' gone with the 18 inchers..."

fatster 03-08-2004 10:30 PM

Apes are the only way to go on a RK... Lookin good

WooHoo! 03-09-2004 06:22 AM

Installed the braided stainless clutch cable and brake lines last night. Braided throttle cables should be in today. Bike might be done tonight. Just in time to be ridden in today's snow. Oh the joy of living in N.E.

I never thought about putting ape bars on a Road King but now that I've seen a few pictures of some I think they're great. Good luck with your bike and I am looking forward to more pictures.

tekman 03-10-2004 05:32 AM

let me know how they are for riding, i've been thinking about some mini-apes on my bike. i'm (hopefully) about to be doing a lot of work to it and was thinking of that too, but don't want it to be uncomfortable.

WooHoo! 03-10-2004 01:25 PM

damnit, the 6"-over throttle cables kept binding up for some reason and we couldn't get them to return unless we took off the nacelle. So now we have to order longer ones (custom made, braided stainless) and run the cables outside, and under the tank, not dipping into the nacelle. Hope it looks ok like that. Anyone else had this problem? I think the hard clear coating on the cables makes them not like the bends under the nacelle. Still hoping to ride the bike home Friday. If so I'll post pics Monday.

Tom 03-10-2004 02:08 PM

what is nacelle ?????
damn $75.00 dollar words anyway ,,,,,,,,,, :-)

tekman 03-11-2004 05:24 AM

NACELLE is the front cover that on Road Kings surround the headlight.

Tom 03-11-2004 06:36 AM

oh ok , thanks for the definition.

Doc 03-22-2004 07:15 PM

I going to put on 10 or 12½ apes on my R King Custom. I think the look is killer. I would go 16 but dont know how much hassle I will get from the cops because of it. Anyone in Massachusetts in here who have ever been stopped for handlebars?

WooHoo! 03-23-2004 06:11 AM

Sorry I haven't had a chance to post pics yet. I rode the bike home with the new apes and it's been snowing ever since (slight exageration). I will post pics soon as it's warm and I can get the bike out of my tiny garage.
Someone asked how it rides... it's awesome. Bike turns in REALLY quick due to the increased leverage of the wide bars. As for comfort they are indeed comfortable. I've a feeling I won't have any problems with all day comfort.
Someone else mentioned putting 10 or 12" mini apes on their King. That is what I had on mine (12" springer bars, basically a mini ape). Look at the pics of my bike in the gallery area to see what it looked like with those bars. They were very comfy, but honestly didn't have much of a "ape look" at all. If you want attitude, I think you gotta at least go with 16"s

tekman 03-23-2004 02:13 PM

can't wait to see more pics...

Took her out for a longer shakedown run this weekend. I freakin love it. Did I say that they are comfortable? I don't man. After just an hour of riding I could feel some discomfort in the shoulders. I'll probably pay the price on a long day for being so cool, LOL.
What do you guys think of the flame graphics I had made to go around the stock tank decal? I traced the stock decal, scanned it, drew the flames in Autocad and outputted the vector data for a vinyl cutter (edecals.com). I like 'em. Kinda' cheesey I know cuz they're not clear coated, but good enough for now until next year when I can afford custom paint.

last one. Kinda dark but you can see the flames decals well.

Mongo 03-29-2004 08:45 AM

The bars look good man...and from a distance...the flames don't look so bad either.

When you're passing people at 90MPH....nobody will notice what the flames look like anyway.

harrigancan 03-29-2004 02:02 PM

Nice job WooHoo. I'd like to hear how the comfort is on long rides after you get ues to them.

Tom 03-29-2004 10:28 PM

WooHoo!
Lookin Good
Bars and flames

WooHoo! 03-30-2004 05:27 AM

Thanks everybody. I forgot to mention one other thing... I did another mod that I like. You can see in the second picture that I hacked off the saddle bag crash bar. I literally hack sawed it off at the bottom, and stuck a chrome plug in the end rather than buying one of those fancy eliminator kits. I know, I know, I'm a hack artist, literally. But seriously, it looks just fine. And I think it makes the bike look better, and longer. Passengers will probably appreciate it too as nearly every woman who's ridden on the bike commented how that bar pushed into their calf muscle.

harrigancan 03-30-2004 03:24 PM

Here I thought those saddle bag crash bars were like a massage for ladies' legs. Kind of like fore play. Silly me.

WooHoo! 03-31-2004 05:55 AM

heh heh. The shorter their legs, the more massage they get. Tall chickies don't really complain that much about it.
