Motorcycle Fuel Economy Questions
 

Hi guys I am new here. I am from Australia and about to purchase my second motorbike.
I owned a bike about 10 years ago and am finally in a position to get another bike (can't wait).

The previous bike I owned (10 years ago) was a Honda CD 250U. Bit of girly bike I know but I liked it, I like cruser style bikes becuase I find them more comfortable easy to ride.

I am currently in the market to buy a used bike and don't know what I should get. I don't want to spend any more than $2,000 which should get me something.

Which bikes generally are better on fuel? For example I will mainly be riding the bike in the suburbs with speeds up to 80Km/h and rarely would I go on the freeway.

I always thought that the lower the CC (cubic capacity engine) the more fuel efficient the bike will be, but is this always the case? I really want to get a 250cc but have been thinking about 400cc & 650cc, which of these would be more fuel efficient? Also on the lower end of the ladder I have even entertained the idea of getting a 125cc scooter (shame on me).

my first bike back in 79 was a honda hawk 400 I traded up to a yamaha 650
6 months later ( I had a need for speed) and then rode a BMW for a long time 900cc now I have a roadstar 1700 v-twin it cruises at 85 and I get 35 MPG or about.
I would go with the 650 it has enough to keep you up to speed if you ever wanted to take a trip with others and light enough for a beginer.
if they have Motorcycle Safety Courses there? if so Take it!!!
and always ride defensive what ever you think that CAGER is gonna do...Trust me he will!!!

I spent about 2 months thinking EXACTLY what you are thinking - even considering scooters!

I wound up buying a Honda Rebel 250cc which will comfortably sustain highway speeds of 70 mph (sorry, I can't "translate" that for you) and get 70 miles per gallon. BRAND NEW, they sell for about $3000 here in the US. I paid $1400 for mine, a 2001 with 3000 miles on it. I LOVE it!

Only problem you might have with it, is if you are not fairly short, I've heard it feels cramped. I am only 5'4" tall and find it extremely comfortable. The guy I bought it from was 5'10" tall & found it cramped.

The O5-06 Buell Lightining series comes with 1203cc engine and reportedly gets 48 mpg city, 60 mpg highway. The capacity for tank ranges from 3.82 to 4.00 gallons depending on speciffic model.
