Motorcycle Mechanics Institute
Does anyone know anything about MMI? I'm considering an education/career in the finer arts of wrench turning, and just curious if anyone has any info or opinions about the school.

Checked into it. They are very flexible on payments and financing, but you have to go to AZ or Florida for somewhere between 12 and 18 months. You have to pay your own housing and all that. It's like $8000 for the education and materials, and they assist with job placement when done. Not for the family man IMO. Good luck if you decide to try it out.

Not only that, but if you check into the going rates for a beginning Tech at a dealer, or an Indy you will be shocked to find they start out at about $8.00 an hour. And you will be doing the shit jobs like changing oil, and tires, and sweeping out the shop.

That's disappointing. I was really hoping to get out of school and start making enough money to buy my brand new Road King. Any body know a surefire way to get rich without working?

Three of my friends have been HD wrenches for years & none of them are MMI certified. -John |
Some people use guns but they usually get caught or killed. You should look into what interests you and when you get the chance for more education go for it. Before you know it your road king will be setting next to your bed. Have fun skully 1200..Leon

Hey FBR, and jmorton, not to come across as a smartass, but if MMI is not the answer does anyone have any suggestions about how to gain the necessary knowledge to get involved in that sort of career. I have to figure the more I know the better my chances are, right?

If you have no real base knowledge and no real practical experience, and this is what you want to do, then do it. All of the wrenches here in eastern IA are MMI and HD certified. Most dealers won't look at you if you aren't, around here that is. I don't know where you live, or how much you think you'll need to make, but it won't hurt to call MMI and talk to one of their staff. They can answer the questions better than any of us, because last I checked I don't know that we have any MMI certified mechanics here. If we do, please reply to this and give us some more insight. Good luck!

Yeah, I'm under the impression that a lot of dealers only hire MMI graduates. I know that my local dealer here in State College, PA has several , if not all of their guys from MMI. It is my understanding from talking to some of those guys that the education they received at MMI is as good as you're going to get anywhere. For some reason, I just have a hard time comitting to life decisions.

I would think wrenching is a viable way to make money. And you can always supplement your income by wrenching at home too. Cash-ola in the pocket. Go to MMI if that's what you want. If you're passionate enough about it, the money will follow.
