Old Man Winter
 

Do you guys do anything special to your bikes in preparation for winter storage? Anything I need to know as we are expecting snow soon.

I never did anything special. I just make sure if I'm not riding it I at least start it and let it get real hot about once a week. Open the garage doors and enjoy the cold breeze while the baby rumbles.

I did know a guy that used to take everything apart for the winter and basically go over the entire bike...that's a little extreme and I wouldn't recommend it. A lot of guy I know buy the fuel additive for 'winterizing' and throw the battery tender on...and try to start the bike about once a month.

With the somewhat warm winters we've been having, I haven't gone the past two years without actually riding my bike for at least a week. Yeah, sometimes in a skiff of snow, but I just can't let her sit there. If I was in warmer climates, which will hopefully come some day I wouldn't have to worry about it....but being in PA I do what I have to.

I just wash it so it's got no road salt or grime on it :D and give all the polished bits a spray of WD40 to stop them furring, then put it in the garage with the gas boiler where it's nice and warm, it sleeps :o there till the springtime when I take it out, recharge the battery and its ready for riding again. :cool:

Some people have told me to not start it throughout the winter due to moisture that builds of from it being cold, then hot, then cold again. Not good for internal parts, plugs, all that. I may just take the battery out, and let her sit covered after a nice bath and wax. Gotta get a cover, any of you guys have one you would recommend??

Don't know where you could get one, but I had a Bodybag II and it worked awesome on the heritage (sniff, sniff)

i do like gill wash spray w d 40 and battery tender i also let it run out of fuel( carb only) if i think it will be a while before i crank it. a battery tender will help alot!!!!!!!! mine is now 3.5 years old

Winter...what's that ??? Thankfully we don't get much winter down here in Tx. so we don't have to deal with storing the bikes. Believe it or not , I've seen quite a few winters here in the Houston area where we didn't even get a freeze.....so just move your asses down here & we can all ride year round !!!

FBR, you don't know how close I was to moving to Houston yesterday. Out of a list of about 25 places Houston was right up there.....but Philadelphia was a choice for me too....so I'm staying here for now.

I lived in Houston in 1999 from May-Sept....during the hottest and dryest summer the area had seen in a while. I loved it and the people, and my girlfriend (now my wife) although initially doubtful ending up liking the place a ton. My wife "needs" snow, whatever the hell that means, otherwise....I'd be moving back to Houston.....but I still try to convince her every chance I get so maybe someday I'll make it back to the Lonestar state.

We get cold, lots of snow in the winter here. I store mine in a heated shop, start her up once a month and let her run. Wash and polish her up real good. In North Dakota the weather changes drastically, who knows we could be riding on Thanksgiving again. I like to keep her ready at all times.

Hey FBR, just may end up moving down there. If do will gladly ride with you.

I wish some of you did at least live closer, It looks like so far I'm the southern-most member of the forums. Mongo if you made it through a hot Texas summer and still liked it you would fit right in....:D And Dizzy, if you move down here I promise you will have a riding partner ;)

So what are ya'll waiting for???
