Power Commander

I'm thinking of buying a Power Commander so I can re-map the EFI on my '02 Road King. (Thinking of adding a K&N air filter) I would appreciate input from anyone who has bought one, such as: Is it worth spending the cash on it for the amount of time I'll actually wind up using it? Is it user friendly, or do you nead a freakin' computer engineer to figure it out? How often do you play around with the EFI mapping anyway? It seems once the mapping is done, you shouldn't have to mess with it anymore unless you make further changes to the engine. Thanks for any answers you can provide.

I'm a "carb" guy, so I'm not much help. But, I do know if you haven't changed out the stock exhaust to a "free flowing" system, I would leave everything as it is....intake included.
A stock Harley will run perfectly fine just as it is. When you change the exhaust, or the intake you usually end up with a lean fuel condition, and then need to rejet, or in your case reflash / remap the EFI.
If you do a stage 1 upgrade on your bike (pipes & intake) you may just need the initial remap/ reflash and that's it. You may not need to invest in a Power Commander.....unless you are going to do more upgrades later.....just my .02....maybe someone else can help with more info.

I had the stage one upgrade done recently on my EFi Road King. The service manager suggested going with the reflash unless I plan further upgrades. He said that almost always the reflash is good enough, but once in awhile the bike won't run quite right and in such cases the Power Commander can correct things. He said that the Power Commander can be fine tuned. I'm no mechanic but he has never steered me wrong yet. Good Luck.

We start remapping when the exhaust is changed.

The EFI was remapped when the V&H slip-ons were installed. I'm not sure what "reflashing" is, as opposed to remapping. Can anyone explain?

It's the same thing.

My husband said Power Commanders ROCK!!!!!!!!

I have had HD shops out here in California tell me that I should remove the Power Commander from my 2001 Road King because of the failures. I was experancing a light flashing on the dash panel "on for 8 seconds and off for one minute" Harley shops stated it was caused by the Power Commander. OK I removed it and installed a "DFO" (Dynamic Fuel Optimizer by Rev Tech) and now the light is still flashing. I think Harley is just does not like the Power Commander anymore because it promots people to put their own power curve in the machine. I just may re-install the Power Commander after I find out why or what causes the flashing lite.

Just got my 04 wideglide back from my local harley dealer. I have not had any time to really ride it, but it feels like it has more power in the mid range. It puts out 76 hp and 80 lb torque about 2.5 increase over base. I am running v/n straightshots and k/n filter. Do I think it is worth the cost, 290 for p/c 325 for dyno? I will have to ride it more. It was also very lean in the mid range before the work and that was fixed so from that stand point it was worth it. A lean engine is not a good thing. Will let you know after I ride more. PS I did find out it is important to have it tuned on the same dyno machine as the p/c maker.

Glad you are getting her tweaked to run right Darrell....like you said lean is bad, I'd rather lose a few MPG's than run too lean...

I think I'll stick with carbs....you gotta be a freaking rocket scientist to work with those damn EFI's especially if you go beyond a Stage 1 upgrade...and if it fucks up out in the boonies... your screwed....

Are you going to LoneStar rally? It was fun last year and I did not have a bike! This year should be a blast!

Darrell, I'm going to go down to the rally that Saturday only....

I'm also gonna ride down this Friday to the island and sit on the deck at Woody's and drink a few cold ones, and watch the waves roll in for a while.......

Looks like a nice place FBR. Wish we could have hit that place one of the times I was down.

FatBoyRider 09-03-2004 04:19 AM

Well...so much for riding to Galveston today. It's raining it's ass off right now, and weatherman says 50% all day.....

PHAT-BOY 09-03-2004 05:55 AM

Rainy in Texas, Sunny in Iowa. Hmm, there's a change. I'll be out all day tomorrow. Me and wifey are headed out for an all day ride. No kiddies, and sunny and 85 degrees. Can't wait.

Well put about 125 miles on the bike monday, and got a chance to check out the power commander. I can feel a difference in the torque in the mid range when I power shift it. The front of the bike lifts harder and faster. If you remember it was lean in the mid range. Overall the bike is more responsive, so yes I think it is worth the money for the pc and dyno, one for the lean fix and second for the power.
