Rejeting carb
 

I have a new FXD 2004 I going to install slip on mufflers and hypercharger. What jet should I use and should I use a new needle or will the stock needle work.

I assume you understand what you need to do ?

I would go with a 45 slow, and the stock main to start with....use the part # 27094-88 Sportster needle, it's a great needle for most CV carb mods. Start with your idle adjustment screw 2 1/2 turns out to start , the screw should not be more than 3 turns out if so, use a 46 slow. Leave the stock slide alone, it should be fine for a stage 1 upgrade.

Thanks for the info. 45 slow, never heard that term befor I think I know the jet your talking about, but I haven't rejeted this carb befor or even seen the inside of one. I'am thanking I should get my hands on a manual that will tell me which jet is which. Can I assume any clips and or spacers on the stock needle should be put on the new needle in the same order. Does H-D have A shop manual or would A clymer manual do?

45 slow....is referring to the "slow" jet. Also with the Sportster needle you won't need to add washers. Just change out the slow jet, the needle....and also you will have to remove the "plug" covering the idle screw, to adjust the idle screw...unless you've already removed it. Harley has 2 manuals you need if your going to do your own "wrenching"...the "shop" manual....and the "parts" manual, the "parts" manual has the exploded views of the parts, and the "shop" manual walks you through various repairs, and general maint. Both are well worth the money.

Thanks for the pics., this helps alot. You said to drop the bowl to do these mods, sounds like I don't have to take off the top of the carb to chang the needle? Also what # is the main jet and what # is the stock slow jet?

Your stock main jet is probably a 170 or 180, and the stock slow jet should be a 42. Also yes, you will need to remove the top of the carb to change the needle.....attached is pic of the slide assembly showing the needle....sorry I forgot to include this earlier... :p

Remove the top of the carburetor. There is a spring under the top cover, so hold it with a finger until all screws are loose. Holding the carburetor upright, remove the cover and spring. The slide/diaphragm assembly can now be removed. Inside the slide you will see the plastic spring seat. Under the spring seat is the jet needle. If I were you Mark, I would remove the carb from the bike before you do all of this......it will be much easier for you...trust me. Let me know when your going to do the mods and I will talk you through it if you need help.
