Trans serice question 89 sportster

I serviced my trans on my 89 sportster the other day and just wanted to double chek, the clymer manuel I have says 1.5 pints is this corect ? And I also used 20w 50 synthetic oil is this cool ? Just double checking to make sure there wasn't a mistake in th manuel before I screw up something. Thanks................

I can't remember the exact oil quantity for the sporty, but its pretty easy to get the level correct. On the rear of the pimary cover, (near the swing arm attach piont on the frame), you'll see a small bolt that you remove when you service the trans. Just add the oil through the cover until it drools out of this bolt hole. The Clymer manual should address this and give you a picture or drawing of where it is. Once you see oil come out of this hole, you've got the level correct. I do know that Harley calls out for a specific oil called "Sportrans". HD makes it (of course), but you can also get it from RevTech. Neither company says what weight this stuff is on the bottle, so I always went with what they called out for. I'd play it safe and dump out the 20/50 and put in the right stuff. Much cheaper to waste a quart of oil than screw up your trans and primary. Good luck.

Thanks for the advise, I think I'll take you up on the oil type It would be alot cheaper to buy a quart of oil then a tranny. Thanks......................

I did some checking on trans oils and found that amsoil has a replacment for the hd trans fluid , it's there 20/50 amv oil . So ther is another choice. Anyone have any input on this, I am still kickin it around.
