What does new fairings mean?

Hi. I found a great 2004 gsxr on sale and I called the guys up asking him questions here and there and I asked him if the bike has ever been down and he goes "no not to my knowledge." so that kinda was weird usually it's a straight up answer. Then he goes I just put in a new front fairing and headlights. Am I a noob in suspecting that he damaged the bike or is that a normal mod? thanks.

Mongo Feb 1, 2007 10:54 AM

I'd suspect that it was a mod if it was an aftermarket fairing or one from a different bike. But if it is a replacement or for the same model I'd be suspicious.

I agree with Mongo. Upgrading with aftermarket fairings is not uncommon but like he said, if they are being replaced with stock fairings be aware.

Also, if the seller doesn't know if the bike has ever been down, he's most likely not the first owner. You might want to ask how many miles are on the bike and make sure the title is clean. My two cents at least. Good luck!!

well he said he bought it from a friend of his. the bike is 2004 gsxr 750cc with 4200 miles on it. stretched, lowered, new fairings and headlights. How can u tell a clean title from a bad one?

Skinny Feb 4, 2007 12:04 PM

If it is a salvage title, that means that it was totaled and has been restored. In that case, the bike could be more prone to mechanical problems if it wasn't restored properly. I had a salvage titled bike once and it was incredibly unstable taking hard turns. Now, granted, that was because it wasn't restored correctly but none-the-less, beware of salvage titles.

If there is a local mechanic that you trust or has a good reputation, I would take it to them if at all possible. That would be the best way to see the real condition of the bike, even if it has a clean title.

I hope that helped to answer your question.

If he installed a new fairing and headlight, chances are he has hit something with the front end. Have a mechanic check the front end.

Sounds like it took an impact.

Changing the front end fairing only means the bike got a smack to the front unless the fairing is not standart. Front impact can have alot wrong with it like the forks the wheel could have a buckel to the frame. It depends on the speed the bike was travelling at when it took the impact. I would'nt touch it myself as you just don't know what else is wrong with it. Ask to see the bike without that fairing on it and you might see the seller backing out of the sale.
Sounds like a bad deal to me, stay clear mate.

Borg.

Have a technician or mechanic check the front gear.
