Where is the oil filter?

Hi again- I know I just got my Sporty and I have tightened all bolts, hexes, etc. I have polished my chrome and tightened my chain. This bike has 800 miles on rebuilt and I say its time to change the oil. I have one problem... where is the oil filter? I dont think its a spin-on but I may be wrong. Can I just take out the old filter and clean it in gas and replace it or do I have to buy a new one. I appreciate the help and advice. '79 Sportster 1000

Should be a spin on filter located near the front of the engine....but I may be wrong. Call your local Harley dealer, or an Independant shop that works on Harleys and they should be able to tell you.

Actually, it's a pick 'em. Right at the end of '78 and prior, it's a drop in filter. From '80 onwards they used both spin on and drop in.

You should easily see the spin on. If you don't, it's the CH6067 Fram drop in and it's towards the bottom center front of the engine. You'll see a seam where the cartridge holder is and there should be one bolt dead center holding it on.
