Am I missing something here?
OK, I've spent about $250 trying to sell my bike for the past 2 months. It's been on Cycletrader.com, Ebay, the Kansas City Star, this site, and OnlineMotorcycleSearch.com. I'm not even getting offers. I had the reserve on the bike set at $18,500 and it only bid up to $15k. I had 23 people watching the auction, and like 3 bid on it. I don't think it's the time of year cause our local Harley shop can't keep bikes on the floor, seems like the market is hot right now. WTF am I missing??? Anyone have any insight?
When you customize a bike it is done in the realization that you will never make a profit on it. It is done to make your bike individual to your tastes. In trying to sell your bike you need to find someone with exactly the same taste. Have you tried to take it and enter it in shows? If it takes a prize then you may get your reserve. With all the custom bikes that look the same the market is flooded. What makes your bike stand out?
Excellent points, but the fact is I'm not looking to turn a profit, I'm just trying to sell a bike. The bike is not so customized that it belongs on a trailer taken to shows, it's done with taste but still practical. Of course like you say this is all my opinion. I don't think trying to get $18,000 out of a 2001 bike with 5000 miles is out of the question. Christ, I just want someone to make me an offer. I'm not even getting that. Not too many shows in IA to take the bike to, and I don't really want to wrap a bunch of money into travel and entry fees. That kind of defeats my point of selling it.
I had the same problem selling my GTO a while ago. You just need to find the right *** for the seat. Took me about 4 months to sell my car. Did e-bay twice with no luck, did all the local and on-line sites too. You just have to be persistant.
I told ya I would give you $5000.00 for that ugly *** bike !!!
Seriously...give it another month or maybe two...as the weather improves people will be thinking "motorcycles"
, Also it's true about losing money on all the "bling bling" we put on our bikes....roughly figure getting 15-20% (at best) back on any money invested in your bike.....sad but true...
Good luck my friend, hopefully someone that can appreciate that bike will come along soon....

don't take offense, but one of the reasons could be the bike is titled as a "Special Construction" and I don't know if many people understand that, they look at the price and see they could get a "real" Harley for that price, and they think that it would be easier to insure, finance, etc..
I think that could be one of the problems that you're having.

I've noticed Road King prices are down now too. I missed my window of opportunity to actually turn a profit on the bike. Bought it for $14,250 in '99 when used ones were selling for $18k on dealer showroom floors. Now they're selling for $12,500 in this area. Even seen them as low as $10,500. Maybe the market is becoming saturated?
Yeah, there are an awful lot of bikes out there for sale. It's definately a buyers market right now. I got a couple leads I'm working on right now. Hopefully spomething will pan out over the weekend.
just an opinion here - as a new biker - everyone is looking for a bargain and hoping someone will sell cheap - I have myself checked out e-bay and other auctions but have not even felt right as to insult someone with a cheap bid - hold out and someone will give you what it is worth - patience mon ami - patience!! good luck!!
what sucks is the market IS saturated, and the used market is saturated, and that means pricing is down.
my dad bought a '05 Road King Custom and the show room is stock, their storage are for bikes is stocked, a bunch of years ago you'd never see this, you would never be able to have a bike the same or next day, you'd have to wait until the new bikes were shipped in.

Back in 1998 it was a 6 month wait for a bike......and then you weren't even guaranteed what color. You put your name on the list for the model you wanted, and $1000 down. When your name came up the next bike that came in of the model you wanted was yours no matter what the color.......if you didn't want it then next guy on the list got it. Oh yeah...if you refused that bike, your name went to the back of the list, and you waited another 6 months. When I got my 2002 (in Dec. of 2001), I had to wait a month, but could get any color I wanted.
My how times have changed.....yes, the market is very saturated now, and it's gonna get worse...

I remember in 2000 when I put my name on the list for a bike. Like you said FBR, no idea what color, just knew it was going to be a Fatboy. they called me on a black one, but I passed it up. Even in 02 it was easier to build this one than wait on a new one. When I buy the next bike, it's gonna be the one I keep til it's paid off. I thought I would with this one, but I gotta rearrange some priorities (money) at this time. I think I'll go with a Road King next.
I got a lead, hopefully he calls this weekend and we can work something out.

Well, Mongo and I had a little conversation earlier today and he made me realize something, I am flat out asking too much for the bike. It's back on Ebay with a lower reserve and updated description. Let's hope for the best!
