Default Biker Virgin

Hi guys, brand new to the forum and to bikes!!

I've wanted to be able to ride a motorbike for a long time and now I've turned 30 I figure I'm old enough to do it without killing myself .

In the past I've only ever been a passenger on a bike before and have yet to ride one. I'm booked in for the UK's now obligatory theory test and will probably book one of these 4-5 day courses that take you through the basic training and full licence practical.

Have any of you got any useful advice for a brand new biker, things to watch out for, good first time bikes etc..

Any tips gratefully received.

Cheers.

Default Ride safe

Rule #1 whatever you think the cagers are gonna do THEY WILL!
they will turn right or left in front of you.
they will change lanes into you
they will pass and head right at you
they will come around a corner on a twisty and be on your side

Don't out ride your bike or your experience,
being in the wind is a great experence!
So remember its the Journey not the destination
enjoy the ride!
and welcome

Add to this, whatever you think they'll do, they won't: they won't signal, pay attention to traffic signals or signs, think, respect your presence on the road, etc. In short, you must pay extra attention, because most other drivers don't. And, don't ever assume anything, or take anything for granted. If someone's on your ***, pull over and let the idiot by. Give yourself 3 or more car lengths following distance. Definately take a rider safety course. You'll gain valuable insight from experienced riders.

Welcome to the world of motorcycles. You've already made a good start with training courses. As stated previously you have to be overly cautious on the road and keep within your limits and those of the motorcycle. Talk to other motorcyclists you meet most are only too willing to share their experience. Stay alert and enjoy the experience.
