anybody here know the shizzy on replacement windows? I have a blue cape (painted cedar shakes) and want a mono-chromatic look for my house. i want the window panes and trim to be a slightly different shade of blue on the outside only. White on the inside is fine. All the replacement windows (vinyl) I see are white both sides. What can I do? Do I have to get wood windows and paint them? Can I paint vinyl windows?

 

I replaced all the windows in my house a few years ago. Did the double hungs in vinyl, and the casements are wood with vinyl cladding on the outside. Screw the completly wooden windows; go with the 100% vinyl or vinyl clad. You'll be a lot happier. Krylon makes a paint called Fusion that's supposed to bond to plastic at a molecular level (hey, pretty scientific, eh?) They have a web site for that stuff, and if I remember correctly they show the available colors. If you scuff the vinyl slightly, it'll probably work well. Still might have to repaint them from time to time, but it has to be better than wood. One other thing you might want to consider: I ripped all the windows completely out, right down to the studs. When I did that, I found little or no insulation around them. It's not a whole lot more work, and in the end you'll have a regular size window (replacements are smaller, obviously, in order for them to fit in the existing frames) and you can be sure they're well insulated. You'll also have a much better selection of windows to choose from. Good luck!

 

Thanks for the advice Junkyard. Another friend of mine suggested doing the "construction windows" as you said. He said it's worth it because then you find out if there's any other damage that needs to be repaired. More confused now.

 

yes agree on tearing out and replacing with full new windows.
as I had mine done about 10 years ago.
and the replacement are smaller,but you can use them as full windows, if old ones are removed completely,which you want any way , to make sure of the insulation around them.

proly a window company can make the exact sizes you need,instead of buying off the shelf windows


as far as for painting, am sure their is paint for those bad boys out there,
and my windows cut down my heat bill by a ton
no more cold drafts,they block both the heat and the cold
in and out,
