Default Any suggestions for stops on I-10

Mid April I'm heading to Mississippi to visit old-Buddies I met while touring South East Asia. No other reasion to go on a 5,000 mile round trip, than to Ride and Visit and did I mention Ride? Never been on Interstate 10 from California, does anyone have any suggestions for stops?

When you get to Louisiana be sure to stop and enjoy the great food . Maybe you could stop off in Baton Rouge 5 miles from where I live and we could get together with a friend in Mandeville and go puttin on some St. Tammery parish roads . Beautiful country roads and great food places ...Raymond

My Email address is RapidoRaptor@hotmail.com. I'll be passing through there on the way to visit a old friend whom lived in Charlamay (may have spelled it wrong) before we met in South East Asia. Now he lives in Long Beach Mississippi. I should hit that area April 14th to 17th and then must return. If I have time I'll call you (send me your phone number) when I could stop and meet at some food place of your choice. But you must know I even get sea sick in a Pearow.

If ya like old timey hole in the wall biker bars, when your south of phoenix and go through Tempe, get off on Baseline rd and head east toward the Superstition mntns (left off I-10). There's a joint called "Antlers" on the left about a mile or two (not much further than that) down the road. It may not be there anymore but it's worth a look if you need a waterin hole stop as it's not very far at all of the highway. Have a good ride

Thanks Ol

Ya must know, I learned to slow down on my drinking long time ago. Now just sip a Scotch or Two on the Rocks then roll on. Check it out when I stop for the night there. I've been to Tempe before and went to a fantastic resterant on the side of a mountain looking over the the city. It was a real Fancy pants western style and I had Rattle Snake (taste like a cross between fish and chicken) before the main corse. They have a must use Slide for new commers, cool place to get a table near the bottom of the slide to watch some of the patrons dropping in, skirts and all. YaaaaaaaHoooooo! To old to do anything else now days.

Long Beach ain't but about 175 miles from my house . The 14th is a Sunday and a nice little day putt round trip . If you want company I'll putt there with you and maybe we could pass thru Mandeville and pick up a couple more riders . In fact if you arrive on morning of 14th I could meet you with about a 1/2 dozen other bikers and we could all putt to Long Beach . I will email you my phone number and you could call when you get close ...Raymond

Don't forget "The Thing In The Desert" ... Somewhere around the AZ/NM border. You'll see signs, believe me.

Ya mean something other than me? I'll keep my eyes alert. Must be in Long Beach Mississippi by April 14th and leaving on the 10th from San Francisco Bay Area. Long hall for 4 days and small gas tank and low gas milage.

Hey , I checked my work schedule , and I will be working the weekend you cruise through Texas, but I was wondering what days you think you might be passing back down I-10 (La. state line to Houston) If we could work it out ,I could meet you at the La. line and ride with you to Houston , I also know a place where I could treat you to some of the best Texas Cajun style seafood you ever ate (a block off of I-10). Let me know if your interested.

Fatboy Rider

It all depends on my old buddies and when they get tired of me or the the other way around. Might be leaving on the 16th or 17th. Never had that kind of sea food any way. Not much of a fishey eater. Love red meat though. If you want, you could send me your Cell or home number and I could call you prior to entering Texas. I just love shift work. This is my Long change. between sets of shifts and 32 hours of vacation to get 15 days off.

Shift work does have advantages , I'm at work now , working days through Thursday , then I'll be off till next Friday night , that will be my long change. It's like having a weeks vacation once a month. And like you I can take 3 or 4 days of vacation along with my long change , and be off for a couple of weeks.
Anyway , back to your trip , I know lot's of good places to eat , good old Texas Bar-B-Que , or steaks. I'll send you my cell # in a private message , and you can call me as you head back through.
I would enjoy getting to meet you , eat a meal with you , and best of all RIDE with ya.... I can't let you ride through Texas within a mile or two of my home , and not get to be a part of your "great" trip.

You got it FatboyRider.

I'll Drop you a line. This is Cool, I've got a Rider I'm meeting in Louisiana as I'll be just miles from his home. I normally ride alone as my shift schedule does not allow for trips which matches others days off.

Rapid,

In my opinion, you oughtta take fatboyrider up on the creole seafood. Not much of a fish eater myself (used to gross me out as a kid) but, down in LA they have come up w/some of the best tasting damn stuff in the world and, it's mostly fish. If your feeling adventurous, I'd suggest the shrimp creaole or crawfish etouffe' (sp?). The way that they cook that stuff it really doesn't even taste like fish as you and I know it and, you'll be close to the mecca of creole/cajun cooking... If not, I don't know if your familiar with Tex/Mex cooking? Ya may wanna try some 'o it as Texas, of course, is the empire of that variety of gut busting lol. Just my two cents worth on your eating habits haha.

"The Thing", if it's still there, is one of those throw back to the days of 40's & 50's roadside attractions before the interstates wiped 'em all out. But, as luck would have it, "The Thing" is right off the interstate so it survived... Not anything real spectacular in a traditional sense (it's not the Louvre) but kinda a humorous and cheesey little phenomenon to break up the monotany a little... makes a gas stop a little less boring. We have a similar (though much bigger and much more enfamous) deal here in the Carolinas called "South Of The Border" & it has survived in spite of being miles and miles from any interstate... you see bilboards all over the Caolinas for it. Just a way to add a little visual humor to a long ride I guess. Like I said, if it's still there, you'll start to see billboards for it somewhere just east of Tuscon.

Happy riding,
OY

Hey Rapid,

I wrote ya a longish reply this morning 'fore I went to work but I guess it didn't take or something. What I was saying is that I'd take dude up on the cajun seafood. I'm not much of a fisheater myself (used to make me gag as a kid) but man, that whole cajun/creole thing is kickin, a lot of it doesn't even taste like fish. Anyway, them creoles really know how to cook and it wouldn't taste like fish as you and I know it. I'd suggest the shrimp creole or the crawfish etouffe' (I rekin Texas cajun is pretty similar to Louisiana?). If ya never had it, it's worth a try.

"The Thing",.. If it's still there you'll see it, don't worry lol.

See ya

Ol

I'll check out the Fishey Food, Some things you just have to get past the smell.

I check out "The Thing" while passen through. Might be good for a distraction at that point.

sorry for not posting sooner but You know how work is about things like this. I'm at work now but Good Friday and all No One is around and I'm just sitting around wasting time.

All

Well I just completed the I-10 ride. I logged a little less than 6000 miles. Did not have much time for visiting as I over stayed in Mississippi and needed to haul my Fat Boy back to California. I never had trouble with vibrations before the new work on the motor but now with the extra cubes and horse power, the vibrations are back to a normal HD vib and I left a string of parts from California to Mississippi and back. Someone just out side of New Orleans has a new dent on front of his car from the rear foot peg that fell off and bounced off of his grill and then over the edge of the causway and into the swamp. All in all the parts that vibrated off were my fault for not putting lock-Tite after working on my own bike. I came back from Mississippi in 3 days. Avg of 950 miles per day. Got rained on, Took shelter from a Good-Ole Tejas (Texas) lightning storm, froze my bones in Mojve (yes it was cold) and arrived home at 2100. Wind was very strong head and side at times. Then my dog barked at me. Then my Wife barked at me. But it was a good trip and I'm now planning my excursion in Mid July to Mid August.
