Default New Buyer

im going to buy a helmet in a couple weeks but there a some things im worried about ...
- getting weaseled into buying something more than i need
- looking stupid

so i was wondering if there are any tips you could give me on what kind of helmets are out there and which might suit a first time rider. im taking it to the MSF/MRC course. i do want comfort on the inside but ive noticed distinct variances on the shape of several differnet helmets. so which do i go for - not brand wise - but "model" wise. thanks.

I have had several helmets. When I was drag racing I went with a Simpson Super Bandit. On my Harley I ride with what is called a half helmet. My lady wears the same. Helmets are a personal preferance, and depend on how safe you want to feel on the road. Weather you want an open face, full face, or half helmet is totally up to you. There are advantages to each. You can never be too safe, or have more than you need. How much is your head worth to you? Make sure you get one with a snug fit. The helmet should feel comfortable, but not move around on your head, and one that is DOT approved. Don't worry about looking stupid.

Most Dealerships carry a wide variety of helmets for you to try out, and see how they fit, as well as how they look. They can help you with sizing. I can't say as I can give you the one you should get, because everyone's head is different. Go with what you feel is the one for you. Try on a lot, and you'll find the one.

Default Helmets

SyyyySy,
As PHAT-BOY says it's all up to what you feel comfortable with. I also wear a half helmet , since it's so damn hot here in Texas I want as much wind on my head as I can get. It has a zip out ear , and neck cover for the cold months. The only other advice I can give is if you are going to be wearing a doo-rag , or bandana...whatever under the helmet, make sure you have that on when trying on helmets to be sure you get a good fit.
Also I'm glad to hear your taking the MSF course , I have taken it , and bottom line is , it really will help you stay alive. I know guys that had been riding for 30+ years that took the course , and also say the same thing.
And about helmets...sometimes I wear mine...sometimes I don't. Here in Texas you still have a choice. I know it makes me safer , and when I don't wear it I understand the risk , but I'm glad I still have the choice.

Let me get this out of the way "Helmet Laws Suck".
OK, now what Phat-Boy and Fatboy Rider are saying is right on. I've had helmets from way back and use now a half Helmet. MSC requires you use a DOT approved helmet and not a Beany helmet. Find one that does not squeze your head but gentlly huggs and is comfortable with some air flow. I recommand an Dew-Rag to help keep your helmet clean and your hair in good order when taking helmit on and off.

I been riding since 1967 and 2 years ago took the MSC in Napa California and was amazed at what bad habits I had and the new tricks I learned.

Good luck

Default Thanks FBR

You know, I was wondering about the didon thing as well. Thanks for asking FBR!

So you kids recommend the MSF course, eh? I've been thinking about taking one for a while now, but didn't know. A lot of people think that experience is the best teacher. I figure if I can power a Suzuki down the 1/4 mile track in 9.8 seconds at 142 mph, I must be a damn good rider. I think I thought wrong. I think based off your input I will sign up.

SyyyySy, I hope you got the info you were looking for.
