fatster? What kinds of frame mods are needed? Also do you know if a longer swing arm is offered? Oh, and where are the shock mounts?

mine is the same kit and all that is required is to cut the fender struts and make new ones, in all honestly i think after doing this i woulda got the 200 kit and it would ave required 1/1000th the fabrication that this thrown together kit does!

I'm sorry.
I did see the 180 kit. A litle pricey for 2" over stock ($430 more). Also you need to go with a 530 chain For it to fit a 200mm tire. So now you have parts you dont use.
If I could spend that kind of cash, I would order a custom +3", braced unit from JMC @ http://www.swingarm.com/ .
If only I could come up with $720 just for an arm, this would be it.
But then I would need to find pulleys, belts, an axil, bearings, and everything else needed.

But thanks for the fast responce.

Do you have any current Pixs of your bike? Can we see them?

Default Custom swingarm for sale

I might be selling my custom swingarm, billet wheel, sprockets "front and rear", 530 chain and partialy finished fender for around $1000.00.

The swingarm is extended 2.5" and is chromed for a 200 tire.

Wheel is 5.5" wide with a 180 tire on it.

Fender is fiberglass with a frenched in plate and only needs to be fiberglasses around the front where it meets the fender struts.

This would be a great kit to add a 180 or 200 series tire. It includes almost everything you need for the conversion except the labor involved installing it.

If people are interested please let me know and I will work on getting some pictures so I can post them. This can be a great deal.

You really dont need a extended swingarm if you cut the crossbrace under the seat and take a scissor jack spread out the frame weld a new brace in and reweld the struts on straight you will have the clearance and the stock look. All these kits are pricey and thrown together I put more thought into taking a **** than these people put into these kits. It's about 200 dollars in time and material (If that) for 1000 bucks. You figure they would at least powdercoat the swingarm for you. When all you use is the swingarm and the trans pully. The rest is junk they give you two pices of 1/2 inch metal for struts that you have to run inside the fender because there is no strut covers made for this. So then you have to run a 11 inch fender over the struts and try to blend it into the frame. which the fender is too big for the tire and blending the fender into the frame without fabing a strutless looks like ****. Then if you fab a strutless you have to either paint the frame or paint the fender black like the frame. So if you do what i did above and run a 10 1/2" Jesse James steeler fender it will look stock. They also give you this 1/2 in billet trans pully cover which looks like **** also. I am still working on a cover for that. Will give you more details when I'm done. So a trans pully and a swing arm for 1000 bucks. A 240 a 16X8 inch rim for 1000 bucks. A belt for 2 something welding, paint, Fab machine work. PM universal brake 400 bucks and a few other things here and there and you have a small fortune. I am lucky my best friend owns a bike shop and I get parts for cost, free advice and machine work. Another friend works for a scrap metal place so materail is free. Well on a good note it's at least 4 to 5 grand to put a kit on a Softail. So if its worth it do it.

So lets say I want to put together my own pile of parts for my bike.
The only thing I thing that I may not be able to find, or know what to ask for is a offset trans sprocket. What offset would I need for the 240mm set-up?

Default offset pulleys for 240 sporty

Anyone know where to find the offset pulley? Like fatster, I too think the kits are junk but have decided to buy it just to the pulley. Any info is appreciated!

I am thinking about making a few. But I'd have to see the cost of machine work. I would like to know how many people are interested in buying them.

Making a pulley shouldnt be to much of a problem. If I can buy one it will obviously be easier. If I cant I am going to make a jig for my lathe that will allow me to bolt the pulley to it. Turn the pulley and make a perfect cut seperating the center splined portion from the outer portion. Then mill the appropriate width "spacer" then weld the pieces back together. Problem is I havent been able to find a used one to practice on. If any one has one from where they changed to a smaller one they want to get rid of cheap let me know. If it works I will post and let everyone know.

I went ahead and bought a kit. When did you get your swing arm. I ordered from CAS4 online and it has been two weeks now. Not really to happy with them. The lit will be here Tuesday. Did you end up using a 10" fender or 11". Drop me a direct email I would like to talk to you about it before I buy the fender. deanrfink@msn.com

Can't wait to see the finished pics, and maybe get a rundown on the build. Looking great man. I've been waffling about doing the same to my bike, you might just push me into buying it.

Keep up the good work!

The wheel was the biggest problem. The hub was too wide and the pully hit the swing arm. So I took .775 off to get the pully right and then had to make SS spacers for both sides of the wheel. For some reason nothing lined up. Couldn't use the stock brake so ordered a universal brake from PM. Made spacers for the inside and outside of the brake mount since it mount to the axle. Decided to go with a new model rotor. So I got a used one for 10 bucks on E-Bay. Got that polished and got the adaptor. Then I get every thing together and the hubs got runout. So I checked the surface on the hub and that was good. I found that the wheel which was a solid 16 x 8 was out. When they punched out the wheel and put the two halfs together to weld them the heat drew one side in. So if you look at the hole in the center that the hub mounts to there was a 30 thousandths gap on one side. Thats shitty German machine work for ya. Anyway I had to tack the center together to keep the gap permant and them machine a offset were the hub bolts up. So the run out is still there but the hub and axle are true. This wheel was ordered from CCI its the only place I can find a 16 x 8 for a 240. I wanted to have a different look than the 18 in rims. Everybodys got that size. It took 2 months to get the rim it was on back order. So I figured it would take 6 months to get it back. This is the second wheel in a row like this from these guys. So if anyone got a source for 16x8 in rims please let me know.

Like fatster said the 11" fender doesnt look right and I am still waiting for a 10.5" to show up. I sat here this morning staring at the bike, finally decided to go all out. I cut the frame and started heating and bending the frame so I can hopefully weld the original fender struts back on and use the stock chrome covers and fit a 10.5" fender in there and have it look right. So far it looks good.

Well since last time I stopped here I came across a “kit” out of Germany.

A setup to fit a 230mm tire in a Sportster frame, with no cutting for under $1600. Now it is extended 2” to keep from cutting the frame, has offset shock mounts, braced, and all the parts you need to fit that tire in the frame. Less the fear of screwing up your frame. Oh and the best news. You want to go to a 240mm tire? For the amazing cost of -$200, you get a chain drive. Yep. $1400. Now guess what I ordered. 2 week from now I will have a braced, 2” over stock swingarm, with an complete assemblage of parts to take my 98”, one tire a session put-put, to get a wider foot print.

For say, the “Smoke Out “. You know. Waste a tire in a week end, get together. Or that over a beer conversation with your buds, lookie see what I did, this time, and it works.

So after the holidays, and relocating North to new digs (It will have a large potting shed. Soon to be a 3 bike, heated play house for me). When I get settled it, I’ll pull the bike apart (one more time), and start converting to a little bit wider tire than my stock 130mm.
Photos forth coming.

And here is the link to that sight where I found that swingarm
http://www.sculpturecycles.com/

Now I just need to find an 8” “Center Line” wheel, setup for a 1” axel.
Then BRAKES. Stopping would be nice.

Ok so time has past since I wrote that last post. Moving and a network crash fowled things on my end.

We are in the new place and the shed is on hold until the ground thaws.

Got a 2000 M2 Buell for Christmas. Converted to a chain, added a SuperTrapp exhaust, changed to a new set of rubber (120\60zr 17 front 200\50zr 17 rear) and a Force Racewinder Carbon Fiber Air Cleaner.

The Wife was tired of seeing me and would have liked to see me riding or in the shed. She said something about my attitude needing adjustment. I replied a bike could possibly do it.

So I don’t have the shed but I sit on the Buell in the garage and make vroom vroom noises. I stair at the pile of parts next to me. Waiting for a warm day to assemble my goodies (The Sportster).

Oh did I mention the rear fender? Just wait. Picture a 1956 Triumph ribbed fender, bobbed. Mounted to the swingarm. With a 240x16 Tire.

Pictures forth coming.

Also if there is a 16” Center Line Rim out there? It does not have to be an 8”. I ran across a shop that can widen rims.

I was eyeballing these along with a few others, but my German isn't as good as it could be and the English references aren't too detailed. I assume since you got one of these that you've talked to these folks... what's the difference between the exenter and superbike swingarms? Is everything centered on the bike with the offsets provided?

MAN. Too many guys adding the fat rears. You're gonna make me spend more of my hard-earned cash on one of these kits, dammit! I still want to see fatster's finished project, that's gonna be a sweet machine.

FYI, these are the sites I've been checking into all in a lump for those who don't want to dredge for the info:

http://www.motorcyclegoodies2.com/CATALOGUE/Chassis/230kit.htm

http://www.cas4.com/Wide-Tire/230-xl-kit-03.htm

working on it man. did some more wacking and welding to the fender today. I wish that the swingarm didnt have the 2 inch ext on it. It seperates the tire and the frame so you have to fill it with somthing. so I cut the stock plastic inner fender in half and am going to rivet it on to the steeler fender and fill the gap with 16 gague sheet metal on the inside and paint it black to match the plastic. When I recop from this Later I will get Millwauke Iron to make me a fender that will hug the tire all the way down to the belt. They are about 8 miles from my house but they've got big money in their head so I probaly pay out the *** for it. Then I got to get a seat made. By the way how do you get a 230 or 240 in a stock frame without cutting it? The with between struts is 6 1/4. thats less than 230 or 240. You still have to fab struts.
Hummmm??????
