Default taking cam cover off of an Ironhead

Can anyone advise me on the above? I have an '80 Ironhead that I need to take the cam cover off so I can put a '77 rear brake lever into the engine case. I was reading my manual and it warns of shims and spacers and stuff that may fall out, and I think it even mentions that the cams may fall out (I can lay the rat chopper on it's side to avoid some or all of this fallout). Is there anyway to avoid this, and is it as bad as it sounds? I've never taken the cam cover off before. Thanks in advance.
