Well, I'm thinking....just thinking....about selling my bike and getting myself into a wide glide for a change of pace and feel. Doing this bike raffle, I have had the chance to become up close and person with a new wide glide, but I haven't ridden it at all. I am wondering if I do buy one next year if I can make the transition. I know the only way to tell is to ride one and see how I feel, but I wanted to get opinions on them from some riders.

Like what kind of riding do you do....long haul...around town...or what?

Like I said, just trying to get your opinions on the bike....so why'd you get the Willie G as your scoot?

I want a change of pace, something that's a little more laid back. Lemme know and thanks a lot.

Thumbs up Wide Glide is good

Mongo, I ride a 2002 FXDWG and I do love it. I have wanted one since first I saw her in 83 or 84. I am glad that I waited for the sake of the fact that I DO love the TC-88 Blockhead for all it's power/torque but if I had it to do over again I would have taken the plunge long ago and spared myself the lackluster of the Honda/Yamaha rut that attention to money can get me into sometimes. I never rode the FXDWG before buying mine and that is because it didn't matter. I just love that machine. Nothing on the road is as fine. Period. It demands attention wherever I go on it and never fails to command some sort of crowd in any park lot. I can't ride her when I'm in a hurry unless I am prepared to be rude and cut peoples gawking short-no ****. I had to lose the seat-Harley and Willie G. should be embarrassed about that piece of crap that they sell that bike with. I put on a Saddleman gel seat. I piped her up with some down slant Screamin' Eagle pipes and they sound real nice. The carb pops some and that is a little of a problem-I would prefer the more refined tune from the injected motors available with the softail. The Dynas are not coming with injected intakes. The carb is a little archaic. Seems like a small sacrifice but it's a sacrifice none-the-less. The suspension is a little poor also. I think they could do a better job on that. It will bottom out and it will do so with a vengeance and it will do so with a notable racket. It rides nice, it's balanced well and after a couple hundred miles it handles well too. It runs twistees like a cat-I cruised Vermont's mountains with the biggest grin that has ever been had by any brother atop a bike-and it runs 75-85 all day long and does it with a relentlessness that leaves you wanting more even after you've been on it all day long. Mongo, the FXDWG is a biker's bike. It aint built for someone who'd like a BMW. I'm not sure how you may take that but I mean it in a Harley kind of way. I'll talk more if you want me to. ITW

Alright, doing a lot of sitting and thinking....wondering if my size will hurt my choice of my next bike. I love the feel of the wide glide, no foolin'.....but my legs seem a little cramped. I'm 6'2" and need a little more extra space.

So, is it possible to put the controls more forward.....say forward controls for the forward controls.....or am I just i just bitchin' about nothing and does it feel natural when you're actually in the saddle.

The way it feels now, I feel like I'd be taping the break or downshifting if I wasn't forcefully holding my feet back. Any experiences, options....etc.

Hi Mongo my first post. I have ridden my 2000 wide glide since april of 2000. I have changed the seat Corbin gunfighter&lady and the exhaust vance&hines pro pipe. Mikuni 42mm carb and the modulater&coil. The ride is ok except for railroad track crossing which is kinda rough. I see there was another post about poor suspension on the WG which I've often wondered about. I don't know about your fwd fwd controls but mine fits me nice I have fairly short legs which seem to keep getting shorter. Anyway thank you for this biker forum I'll return often and hope to gain some knowledge here. Leon

Lightbulb FXDWG

I have a 98 that I bought new and am considering selling it.

Riding two-up and packed with all our gear it rides like a hard tail.

Throw a hand full of change down in a parking lot and you can tell if it was a nickel or a dime when you ride over it.

Ok, it is not that bad

Seriously, it is a great bike the only thing that really bothers me is not having mid frame pegs on long trips.

I've had two knee surgerys and at 5'9" I have to push my feet against the forward controls all the time.

It would be nice to rest on mid frame pegs once in awhile.
The frame is drilled for pegs and I have been checking swap meets for a used pair just not sure if they will clear the pipes.

I wouldn't mind a hard ride (hell I used to own a triumph).....just wondering if I would fit without much trouble. Guess the only way to answer that question is to take one out for a ride. Any offers? Just kidding.

Triumph ? Hard ride ?

This picture is of me with a 1st place Trophy at the 2001 Cherry Creek Hare-n-Hound 85 mile off road desert race.
Camera had real fast film in it so you can't see my legs wobbleing
or the blood soaked kidney belt.

Nice pick. I like the old triumphs, my bones would hurt for days after a long ride. I remember riding down the street losing parts (seemed like every time I rode)....and wondering if all that noise was normal.

Default '68 Bonnie Chopper I used to have

had a magic 25 mile trip settings on it.

If I ever rode it more than 25 miles from the house it would breakdown.

Back to the Wide Glide-->

We Demo rode every bike we could at Sturgis last year and we decided to sell the Glide and get a Road Glide

thanks glydin, I'll definitely check them out. When I was last at the HD shop around here I sat on a '98 and it didn't feel to bad. Actually it felt good. I didn't get to take it for a ride to see how I actually felt with the controls, but that's something I'll do before I make my decision on my next bike.

Default Footboards

Mongo, I have been rooting around in auction sites and so-forth and have learned that they do make some footboards for the FXD and I've been learning that there are some available for the Wide Glide too. They are an option for cop-cruisers. Might be a "look-into" for you. They may also be a option for the other fella who was talking about the need for an alternate foot position on long runs. I DO know about that. Feet forward is the best for the longest ride but when you need an alternate let's face it, you need an alternate. I'm researching that right now, I'm thinking of just mid pegs but I'm not ruling out boards in-spite of their size. I am a little concerned about pipe clearance but I also don't want to throw that scooter's natural simplistic grace down the toilet either. To much is just to much-gotta be careful when I'm tweakin' these things. I have a tendency to go overboard when I am personalizing my scooters. I gotta keep balance in there.
