Default Ignition Coil Problems

Does anybody know why an ignition coil would keep conking out on me? Something that would lead to this? I'm having some problems same as I did last summer with the ignition coil...and just wondering if there was something I was missing.

Default Symptoms.... or results?????

Define conking...... Is it burning up.....Are the leads arcing..... Is it dropping Voltage..... I hate to do it that way, but really the best way to diagnose a situation on a component is to describe what it is doing at or around the time of failure as well as what is the end result..... It's the tech (Diesel and Gas Burner) in me that asks the questions...

Can't tell what it's doing when it happens, since I'm riding the bike....by conking....I mean...the bike shuts off and I stall and coast to the side of the road.

Default Diagnostics 101

OK.... first off.. when you put on the coil.. are ALL wires associated with it in good working order..ie.Resistance, shielding, corrosion..... cuz if it is happenning while you are riding and it just dies.... it could be a short in the harness. When I had my 92 FLSTF, I was going through rotors (x2) every 5k or so... turned out that I had an open housing on my harness and it was rubbing on the metal and causing it to burn up..... Took me over a year to find it.. Small little thing like that will drive you nutz!!!

Well, it's fixed. It was about a two minute job.

When the dude who had the bike before me put on a new ignition, he used the wiring from the new ignition.

So I take off the cover to look at the coil and expect to see....white, white, pink. Instead I see....white, white, blue, and a dangling pink. Yeah you guessed it, when he put the new ignition on he used the new wiring and let the pink dangle. This dangling wire can cause trouble....so I snipped it, tied it off....and rode 144 miles yesterday with no problem.
