Default Motorcycle Techs?

As a debate that could go on and on....I'll open it up here. Who do you think are the best motorcycle techs. Those professionally trained or those with just tons of experience under their belt that just learned by doing?

Post your vote to the poll, then post a message to explain.

In my opinion most professionally trained techs work in a dealer shop, or something similar, where they don't get much "out of the ordinary" experience. People that tinker, and learn themselves, seem to get a little more radical, take more risks, and seem to offer more variety in horsepower making techniques. I say most as to not offend any techs in here.

You'll find a Bro that has been working on his own ride or maybe some others ride will be more apt to go the extra mile when it comes to problems that he comes across. "Seat of the pants" in my opinion is the best learning experience. Book people seem to be fairly cut and dry.

I have to agree with the self trained...but being a professionally trained...I have to go with that. I did a lot of tinkerin when I was messin with mine...but bein trained helped me with little things like electronics and many things inside the motor that I was too afraid to look into on my mill. Factory (or the equivilant) training is actually a better way to go in my opinion.
One other thing, did ya ever think that maybe that guy in his own shop that has been doin it for a few years, may be trained and out on his own after servin his "Apprenticeship"? I know a few of those guys and they are excellant wrenches. The one guy I use a lot, is actually factory trained not only with H-D but with Honda and Yamaha as well. Everybody has to get training somewhere ...be it by the seat of his pants or going to a certified school. At least in school, they get taught the way it should be as far as factory specs.

I'd rather have someone that's been "wrenching" on scooters for years under some oak tree , than some 90 day wonder from the H-D tech school.....no doubt about it....you can't buy experience..you can only live it , learn it & and earn it.

WELL, I've done a lot of stuff over my years. Mostly learned on my own, but every now and then I'll go take a class on it and I'll learn some trick or tip that I would have NEVER learned on my own. My vote is for LOTS of real world hands on experience with some classroom training for indepth stuff, tricks and tips.
