Quad Ring?

Quad Ring?
I need some help. I am putting my 1997 sporty back together. I am attempting to put the drive sprocket back on. The exploded view in the book shows a “Quad Ring” under the spacer. I do not remember anything there when I took the motor apart and I do not have one in my parts. I had a local bike shop put new bearings in the cases for me. It is possible that the “Quad Ring” was behind the seal and just did not see it. The picture in the book makes it look like an O-Ring. Does anyone know if it is just an O-Ring that can be replaced with one that is close, or is it a crucial item that has to be to spec? If someone has a part number that would be great.

You said the "exploded view" in the book...I assume you mean a parts manual for a 97 Sporty? If it is a H-D parts manual it will have a parts # for the quad ring....if so you can get one, or order one from your stealer. Also, if it shows one being there I would make sure one is there in the reinstall, and make very sure it is the correct one....do it right the first time.

I have gone through the new gasket set and found a 4-sided O-Ringish part. If I can not find anyone that can say for sure I will make a SWAG and go with it. I am sure that the stealer will say, "bring it in and we will take a look at it". Through deductive reasoning I have found a home for all of the other O-Rings except for the 4-sided one. Looking at the application a quad ring would make the seal between the spline shaft and the inner part of the spacer. The bearing seal seals the outer part of the spacer.
P.S. SWAG= Scientific Wild *** Guess

That's it Dilligaf....the four sided "o" ring is the quad ring.....four sided...hence "quad".
You should be good to go now, install it where the diagram shows, and all should be well...I have attached a picture of a "quad ring" in case anyone's wondering what the hell we're talking about...Also, a four sided "quad ring" is superior to an "o" ring, in that it provides twice the sealing surface of a standard "o" ring, and requires less pressure to maintain an effective seal.
