Default Road King shifter linkage

I recently replaced my shifter linkage and found that no matter how far out or in I adjust it, it wont shift to a higher gear unless I tap on the front of the toe/heal shifter. can anyone tell me if there is supposed to be a spring in the front of the shifter where the grease insert is? If there is not a spring in the front, can you tell me what it might be? Please help. Thanks.
